TV viewing distance calculator

Work out how far to sit from a TV, or which size suits the distance you have.

Side view, not to scale for the TV itself. The green band is the recommended range.

How this works

A common guide is to sit 1.2 to 1.6 times the screen diagonal away, which puts the screen at roughly 30 to 40 degrees of your view. It is a rule of thumb, not a strict rule. Sitting a little closer or further is fine, and personal taste varies.

Questions

Does resolution change the distance?

A little. On a lower resolution picture, sitting too close can make individual pixels visible, so you may prefer the further end of the range. With 4K, many people are happy at the closer end.

How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?

Roughly 6.5 to 8.7 feet (2.0 to 2.6 m). Enter 65 above to see it drawn.

What if my room is smaller than the range?

Choose the distance you have, switch to “I know the distance”, and it suggests TV sizes that suit it.
