TV mounting height calculator
See how high to hang your TV so it sits comfortably at eye level when you are seated.
Side view. Heights are measured from the floor to the screen itself, not the frame or bracket.
How this works
The usual advice is to put the middle of the screen at your eye level when you are seated. A typical sofa gives an eye height of roughly 100 to 110 cm (40 to 43 inches), but sit down and measure yours. If you need the TV higher, for example above a fireplace, set “Centre above eye level”. As a rule of thumb, looking up more than about 15 degrees gets uncomfortable, and a tilting bracket helps.
Questions
How high should I mount a 55 inch TV?
For a seated eye height of about 105 cm, the centre of the screen should be at about 105 cm, which puts the bottom edge around 71 cm from the floor. Enter your own numbers above.
Can I mount a TV above a fireplace?
You can, but it puts the screen well above eye level. Enter the extra height in “Centre above eye level” and check the angle shown. A tilting bracket reduces the strain.
Do I measure to the frame or the screen?
This calculator uses the visible screen. The frame adds a little, so check the spec sheet and the bracket’s mounting holes before drilling.
